Chain wax

Waxed, not lubed

Cleaner, quieter, and the drivetrain lasts far longer. Post me your chain, add it to a service, or buy a new chain already waxed and ready to fit.

Send your chain

£29

Stripped of grease, cleaned and hot immersion waxed. Pay here, post the chain to me, and it comes back ready to fit. UK return postage included.

Local? Drop the bike off, or have it collected.

Two-chain wax plan

from £24/month

Two waxed chains, one on the bike and one ready. Post the used one in once a month and it comes back waxed. £24 a month for a year, or £26 rolling. Postage both ways included.

How the plan works

Why, how, and choose your two chains.

Chain wax is also in every Platinum service, and you can add it to any booking.

New chains

Buy a new chain, pre-waxed

Every chain on the shelf comes two ways: plain at the maker's UK price, or hot-waxed for £20 more. For the waxed one I strip the factory grease off and dip it in Squirt Performance Hot Wax, so it goes on clean and quiet and you skip the messy first clean.

Pick by the speed of your cassette, then check the “Fits” line: SRAM T-Type, SRAM Flattop road and Shimano Linkglide each need their own chain. Not listed? Tell me your drivetrain and I'll get one in.

Every chain comes with its own joining link. If you'll be taking the chain off to wax it, add a Connex Link on the chain's page: it opens by hand, no tool, and can be used over and over, where the Shimano, SRAM and KMC 12-speed links are single use.

The plan

How the two-chain wax plan works

1. Two chains, both waxed

Pick any two chains from the shop (two of the same is best). They come hot-waxed, with the first wax included. One goes on the bike, the other waits in its bag.

2. Once a month, swap over

Fit the clean chain and post the used one to me in the pre-paid bag. I re-wax it and post it straight back, so there's always a waxed chain on the bike and you never wait for the post.

3. One wax per payment

£24 a month for a year, or £26 a month rolling and cancel any time. Each payment is one wax and your plan page counts them down. Every chain is checked for wear when it comes in. Extra wax for a race? £20.

The monthly payment covers one wax, postage both ways, a new quick link when it needs one and the wear checks. The 12-month plan stops by itself after 12 payments and I email you before it does; the rolling plan runs until you cancel.

Choose your chains and startPay for the two chains and the first month today; your returns bag comes with the chains.

Chain wax FAQ

Why wax your chain?

Traditional lube is wet and even in the best conditions attracts and holds dirt. Hot wax dries solid and polishes to a smooth surface that dirt can't get into.

Is chain wax better than drip lube?

Yes. It saves watts and money, and a waxed chain can last up to ten times longer than one run on drip lube.

Do waxed chains last longer?

Wax stops the metal surfaces inside the chain rubbing together, so it takes far longer to wear. Your cassette, chainrings and jockey wheels last longer too.

How often do I need to re-wax?

On dry roads, top up with a drip wax every 200 miles and re-dip every 1,000–1,500 miles. Dry off-road, roughly half that. In the wet you may want to re-wax after each wet ride.

What's the best way to run a waxed chain?

Run two chains in rotation: ride one until it needs re-waxing, then swap to the other. Replace both at 0.5% wear. You'll usually get two or three sets of chains through one cassette. That is exactly what the two-chain wax plan does for you, with me doing the waxing.

Is there a drip wax option?

Yes. Have your chain hot waxed when you buy it from us, then top up with Silca Synergetic drip wax, or use drip wax on its own from a clean chain.

What wax do you use?

Squirt Performance Hot Wax, for every chain: the ones you send in and the new chains I wax before they go out.

Which chain do I need?

Match the speed of your cassette, then the system: Shimano Hyperglide+ and older SRAM Eagle share chains, but SRAM T-Type (Transmission), SRAM Flattop road and Shimano Linkglide each need their own. Every chain on this page says what it fits. Send me a photo of your rear mech and cassette if in doubt.
