kLite

Dynamo lighting and USB charging that has lit the Tour Divide and won the Silk Road Mountain Race. Nothing to charge and nothing to forget. As the nights draw in, the light is just there when you get on the bike. Travers Bikes is the European home of kLite: lights, parts and advice from riders who use them, shipped across the UK and Europe.

Which light

Adventure or Race?

Both lights put out 1300 lumens, and both start giving light at about 10 km/h. The difference is where the light goes. I run the Adventure on my own bike, a MIGHTi 32 with a SON hub.

You can race on the Adventure. kLite's own riders often prefer its wider beam on rough courses. The one reason to pick the Race light for a race is if you need to top up a tracker or head unit during the night.

Put it together

Choose your light and parts

Every bike is different, so I sell the light, the wiring, the mount and the rear light on their own. Pick what you need and add it all to the basket in one go.

1 · Choose your light

Adventure has a wide beam for rough tracks at low speed. Race throws further for faster riding.

2 · Wiring to your dynamo hub

The bar switch loom connects the hub to the light and a USB charger. The single lead is the simple version with no switch. The Micro-D is a loom with a USB C charger built in, so with it you skip step 3.

3 · USB charging (optional)

Charges a GPS, phone or battery pack from the dynamo hub while you ride. The Micro comes with a USB A or a USB C socket, which you choose in Your set-up. The round bar mount version is USB A only.

4 · Rear light (optional)

The QUBE USB runs from a USB charger. The QUBE AC runs straight from the dynamo hub, or from the rear light lead on the Micro-D.

5 · Mount

Your light already comes with a mount. These are for a replacement, or for a second bike.

Questions

kLite questions

What is the difference between lumens and lux?

Lumens is how much light a lamp makes. Lux is how far that light reaches down the trail. Both ULTRA lights make 1300 lumens, but the Race light has the higher lux, so it throws further. The Adventure spreads the same light wider, which is better for slower, rougher riding.

Why does the centre LED go out when I charge something?

A dynamo hub only makes about 3 watts. If you pull a lot of power for USB charging while the light is on, with the always on loom, the light goes into power share mode and the USB gets priority, so the centre LED goes out. To get the most USB power, charge in the daytime with the light off.

Is the USB charger waterproof?

The body is, but the USB sockets can rust if they sit in the rain. Keep it in a top tube bag or frame bag, or put a little dielectric grease on the socket.

Can I run the light upside down?

Yes. The heatsink can face up or down. Just do not mount it sideways.

Can I use the bar switch loom with another make of light?

Yes. The loom only passes power from the hub to two plugs. Put an XT30 plug on the other light's lead and it plugs straight in.

Can I use another make of rear light?

Yes, as long as it is wired so it comes on at the same time as the front light. Most rear lights are already wired to the front one, so add an XT30 plug to your old set-up and you are done.

Which power bank should I charge?

Most USB devices will charge, but a hub only makes about 3 watts, so it is slower than a wall charger. kLite suggest a 10,000 mAh power bank, and taking two if you can. A quick charge one (QC 3.0 or USB PD) charges up to three times faster from the wall.

Can I run the light from a battery or power bank?

No. A hub makes AC power and a battery gives DC, so the light needs a dynamo.

Can I use a bottle dynamo?

It will work, but a bottle dynamo does not make enough power to light the kLite fully the way a hub does.

My light does not switch on and off, but my USB charger does.

The leads are the wrong way round. The short lead goes to the light and the long lead goes to the USB charger. On the always on loom the long lead is always on.

Can you fit it?

Yes. Book it into the workshop in Canewdon, near Rochford, and I will fit the light and the wiring. If you need a wheel built around a dynamo hub, I do that too.
