Nextie NXT29T27 Review

Thanks to Gavin Thomas for the NXT29T27 Review

Finally getting round to doing a little write up/review on the Nextie carbon rims. I have been running them on my mtb since been lucky enough to win them racing in the Travers ESES race series. Thanks again Mr Travers

I have covered over 500 miles on them now mostly off the beaten track so feel now is the time to pass on my thoughts.
Certain people reading may be horrified to see them been run with wire beaded tyres and cheap inner tubes with each weighing substantially more than the rims themselves. However for the purpose of the review it is quite good as the tyres tubes and hubs are all the same ones that I was running on my Stan crest rims before so it really is a back to back test. However don’t worry I will be converting to a “proper” tubeless setup with fresh boots soon.
Firstly the Build of these from travers bikes is second to none. Lovely spokes evenly tensioned and well built with nice little touches like red anodised nipples and x2 black ones either side of the valve hole. Little touches like this really set them off and make them feel like a quality product. Setup is a breeze too with a good shape to the rim allowing tyres to go on and off a breeze (unlike the stans flat seat which makes getting tyres on and off an absolute T**T)
So popped the tyres, brake rotors and cassette on, slotted them in the bike and headed off for a ride. First stop Hadleigh! I couldn’t think of a better local testing/proving ground.
First impressions on the 10 boring road miles between Basildon and Hadleigh are great and I immediately noticed how responsive the wheels are to the stans. Just push on the pedals and the bike shoots forward eagerly. None of the flex and give that was there before.
Before getting to Hadleigh I couldn’t resist a little play/cut through the Glen. On the fast downhill run they really do feel great. Can push them into turns without flex and they really do feel direct. Climbing back out the other side the gain in pedaling efficiency is again very noticeable and they feel a pleasure to climb with.
Onto Hadleigh and after a quick pootle round the berms and the blue loop it was on to x4 back to back red loop laps to give them a workout. All previous statements ring true again and I feel I am flying along up and down hill at a good pace. The rocky terrain also lets another feature of the wheels shine through which is the feel they give over the rough terrain. They don’t flex but kind of cushion and remove the buzz from the trail. Hard to describe but anyone who has ridden a carbon and aluminium bike back to back may get what I mean.
I was also at first a bit hesitant about smashing down the A lines at Hadleigh on my nice new hoops but the fears soon went away. Despite the low tyres pressures that I choose to run the rims didn’t seem to flinch or feel worried. After many rides and a few heavy handed moments at Hadleigh and further afield trail centres they are still looking as good as new. Even after inspecting the spokes to see if anything had loosened nothing was a miss. Only issue they have had is getting a bit dirty and a splattering of cow s**t, (sooner someone makes them into gourmet burgers the better!)
Anyway if you’re in the market for some new hoops do give these a shout. Ride great, light weight, look bling, what’s not to like
