FAQ - General
Why wax your chain?
Traditional lube is wet and even in the best conditions will attract and retain dirt. Hot wax once applied and dried is solid and will polish to a smooth surafe that dirt can not penetrate
Is chain wax better than drip (non wax) lube?
Put simply....Yes! It will save you Watts (the amount is depending on your chain and riding conditions), it will save you money, a waxed chain can last upto 10x longer than one with drip (Non wax) lube
Is waxing your chain worth it?
Even if it just the simple fact it will save you money on new chains, cassesttes and chainrings its worth it let alone the how clean and silent the chain is with wax
Is wax good for bike chains?
The only surface that needs to be lubricated is the internal roller and pin that articulate as the chain bends around the chainrings, cassette and jockey wheels, the external surfaces do not need lube, make sure you dry your chain after a wet ride to prevent rust no matter which method of chain lubricant you choose.
Do waxed chains last longer?
Waxing the chain prevents the metal surfaces rubbing together internally on the chain, this means the chain takes many more kilometers/miles before it shows signs of wear. As the chain is wearing over a longer period this has a knock on effect of preserving the cassette, chain ring/s and jockey wheels.
How often do I need to wax my chain?
Every 200mi (321km) - Drip 2 drops per link of Super Secret Chain Lube
Every 1,000-1,500mi (1,600-2,400km) - If you are hot waxing, you may want to re-dip your chain in the hot wax pot.
How long will Silca Secret wax last?
This is very dependent on riding surface and weather conditions. Dry summer months on the road and the above will apply, Dry offroad miles you are probably talking in the region of half before you need to do a full immersion hot wax again, so 500-750mi (700-1000km). In the wet you might want to do it after each wet ride.
What is the best practice when using a waxed chain?
Remember chains are by far the cheapest part of the drive train. You should run 2 chain in rotation, run 1 until it needs rewaxing then swap to the other already waxed chain. When the chain gets to 0.5% wear replace both, you should be able to get atleast 2 sets of chains through one cassette, quite often 3 sets.
Is hot wax ever not good the best option?
Hot wax is always the best starting point for any chain no matter the surface or conditions because the wax is solid even in wet conditions it will not allow dirt and grime into the internal workings of the chain. Yes it will wear quicker in the wet but so will any lube.
I don't want to hot wax my chain is there a drip wax?
Yes, you can either get your chain hot waxed when you buy it from Travers Bikes and then use Silca Synergetic drip lube to top this up or on its own from the strart with a fresh clean chain
